The Classic Motorcycle Odyssey - from Beijing to Arnhem 2005

The Last Hurrah: Odyssey or Idiocy?

The Last Hurrah turned out to be an amazing and challenging adventure - two silly old fools riding two-wheeled museum pieces halfway across the world, thankfully with the resolute, staunch and above all young, fit and healthy Stephen along to support and film their efforts. Ultimately it proved to be a wonderfully successful three months, tempered by the occasional set-back including needing to seek medical assistance in four countries. They wanted the exotic... they got it in huge measures. They didn't achieve all their goals... but who cares.

Our Goals

The main goals that they had hoped to meet were

  • Navigating to the Degree Confluence Point 49N, 90E in Western Mongolia. Here we will construct a small Uvoo (stone cairn) and leave some small treasures for future generations etc.

A wonderful afternoon was spent making the Uvoo and leaving our treasures.

  • Meet with and surprise the Silkriders (expedition of 6 BMW motorcyclists riding the Silk Road from Venice) in Tashkent.

Sadly we were too late due to delays in Beijing and the birds had flown.

  • Visit the Silk Road towns of Bukhara, Sammakand and Khiva.

Well we got to Samakand... what a jewel!

  • Cross the Karakoram Highway from China to Pakistan. (One of the highest public roads in the world).

Truly a highlight of the trip, riding on the roof of the world and crossing a pass higher than 16,000 ft.

  • In Esfahan, Iran try to locate Ernie the ES2 Norton that Des sold to "Shaking Minarets" in 1974.

We failed to get to Esfahan due to time constraints so may have to come back later.

  • Ride to a 70th birthday party in Holland arriving on the bikes (9,000 km detour).

After travelling nearly 20,000 kms by bike, boat, train and plane, we arrived 10 minutes late.

  • Collect enough memories and tales to last through our dotage.

We sure did. Watch this space for a sequel.

  • Write a book of the journey with an accompanying DVD.
